Donegal Post

The Donegal Post is a weekly local paper published in Donegal town in County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. It was founded in June 2006 by Tim Collins and Padraig O’Dwyer’s River Media Group. River Media owned several papers in the region at that time, including the Derry News and County Derry Post.
River Media’s business plan sought to revitalise regional newspapers by producing community-centred titles designed for a younger demographic (20–50). It launched its first title, The Letterkenny Post, in 2006. Other regional titles - the Kildare Post, Inish Times, and Finn Valley Post - quickly followed. River Media was also an early adopter of digital innovation, developing websites such as Donegal Now and Derry Now. By 2008, the group operated more than a dozen print and online publications and employed around 200 people across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The 2008 economic crash brought financial strain. The River Media Group posted an €1.7 million loss in 2009 and entered receivership in 2011. However, after major restructuring and consolidation of operations, a new entity, River Media Newspapers Limited, continued to operate its six print titles. However, the group continued to struggle, and in 2018, River Media was acquired by Formpress Publishing Limited. In their assessment of the merger, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission noted that “River Media titles have been loss-making for a number of years and as a result, the River Media titles can no longer be supported under their current ownership. The directors of River Media are therefore looking to dispose of the titles and if no acquirer were to be found, then the titles would be forced to be shut immediately.”
As noted, River Media’s holdings, including the Donegal Post, were purchased by Formpress Publishing Ltd. (now Iconic Media) in 2018. Iconic Media is owned by Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited. Media Concierge is wholly owned by The Denmark Family, with UK businessman Malcolm Denmark as the controlling shareholder.
The Donegal Post is now printed on Wednesday and also populates the news site donegallive.com, which includes content from its sister papers, the Donegal Democrat, the Inish Times, and the Inishowen Independent. According to the website, the papers together have a weekly audience of 61,000.

Accurate estimation of audience share is not possible. Although Kantar collects publicly available figures on readership for national titles, parallel figures are not available for regional and local newspapers. Additionally, overall revenue details for the market as a whole are not available. Accurate estimation of audience share was not possible because there is currently no standard of audience measurement available for print and online news titles in Ireland. Individual outlets may publish data on readership or users; however, measurement parameters and sources vary between organisations, thereby limiting opportunities for comparison. | |
