The Dundalk Democrat

The Dundalk Democrat is a weekly local paper published in Dundalk, County Louth in the Republic of Ireland.

The Democrat was established by Joseph Cartan as The Dundalk Democrat and People’s Journal in 1849. Cartan was an advocate for Irish independence and printed the paper from the Cartan Family’s hotel in the town.

The paper appears to have struggled financially in its early decades, and it was not until Thomas Roe partnered with Cartan in 1872, that it was placed on a sound commercial footing.

The paper would remain in the Roe family until 2000. Though enjoying a weekly circulation of 16,000 and employing 20 people in 2000, it was regarded as somewhat dated in its approach, using older printing technology and – unusually – continuing to entirely dedicate its front page to a masthead and advertisements.

In 2000, however, the title was acquired by the Leinster Leader Group in a deal worth in the region of €2.5m. The Democrat’s ownership has changed twice more since. The Leader Group’s holdings were purchased by UK-based Johnstown Press in 2005, and in 2014, were in turn sold onto Iconic Media (operated by Form Press Publishing Ltd.). Iconic is owned by Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited. Media Concierge is wholly owned by The Denmark Family, with UK businessman Malcolm Denmark as the controlling shareholder.

As of 2025, the Democrat publishes a print edition on Tuesdays and operates www.dundalkdemocrat.ie, which provides similar content to that appearing in its print edition. According to the paper’s website, it generates a weekly audience of 15,000 across print and online.

Founding Year	1849
Founder	Joseph Cartan Joseph Cartan, from Tullyallen in South Louth, came to Dundalk at some stage in the 1830s or 1840s and set up a horse hackney business on Clanbrassil Street. He also did some small printing of hand-bills and posters on the side. Clanbrassil Street was also the location for a coaching inn run by a man named McGovern. When McGovern died young, Cartan married his widow and took over the inn, which became known as Cartan’s Hotel. In 1849 Cartan began printing the Dundalk Democrat and People’s Journal from the hotel. He was an advocate for Irish nationalism and a staunch supporter of Daniel O’Connell (who he appears to have hosted in the hotel at least twice during the 1840s when O’Connell came to Dundalk to address mass rallies. Cartan briefly served time (five weeks) in jail in 1852 after Lord Clermont successfully took a libel claim against the Dundalk Democrat.
CEO	Malcolm Denmark Malcolm Denmark is an advertising executive who established Mediaforce UK in 1985, an advertising agency which represented media owners to advertising agencies. At the time, Mediaforce focused mainly on regional outlets across the UK. However, the business now includes the production and distribution of inserts in local and national titles. It has also expanded into print and online outlet ownership through an aggressive acquisition policy focusing on regional and local media publishers in the UK and Ireland. Since the establishment of Mediaforce, Malcolm Denmark’s business interests have expanded in this sector. He has established Media Concierge (Holdings) Ltd., which includes a number of subsidiaries, including Mediaforce, as well as business activities to encompass a full range of advertising services such as representation, marketing, publishing, and distribution for Iconic Media in Ireland (Mediaforce Ireland/Formpress), which is the news publishing section of his business. In addition to media businesses, Malcolm Denmark also holds significant property interests and is the owner of multiple race horses. Malcolm Denmark owns 75.2% of Media Concierge, alongside his son Callum Nicolas Denmark’s 15%, his daughter Tara Clare Denmark’s 9% and Valerie Mary Denmark (born 1957) 0.76%.
