The Limerick Leader

The Limerick Leader is one of two weekly newspapers published in Limerick, a city of 100,000 people in the Mid-West region of Ireland. The paper’s print circulation is approximately 13,000, and according to its website, reaches a combined print and online audience of 90,000. The online arm of the paper, limerickleader.ie, publishes content similar to that appearing in the print publication, though it is updated daily.
The Limerick Leader was founded in 1889 by nationalist sympathiser Jeremiah Buckley, and under his guidance, it advocated Home Rule and land reform policies. Given such leanings, the paper was monitored early on by British intelligence services, and several early editors were jailed. Buckley himself was imprisoned in 1902 for an editorial he wrote criticising forced tenant evictions. During a 1989 RTE broadcast celebrating the Leader’s centenary, the then-editor, Brendan Halligan, stated that the paper’s aims had not changed since its activist founding: “We are still interested in the ordinary person.”
The Limerick Leader’s influence in the region expanded significantly when it purchased the Limerick Chronicle in 1952. The Chronicle was founded in 1768. Until its 2018 incorporation into the Leader’s print edition as an insert, the Limerick Chronicle was Ireland’s oldest newspaper.
The Buckley family owned the Limerick Leader until 2002, when it (along with three other titles) was sold to Leinster Leader Ltd for a reported €23m. The paper again changed hands when it was later acquired by Johnstown Press. In 2014, Iconic Media purchased Johnstown Press’ Irish holdings, and the Limerick Leader was subsequently operated by Iconic’s subsidiary, Formpress Publishing Ltd. Iconic Media is owned by Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited, which is wholly owned by The Denmark Family, with UK businessman Malcolm Denmark as the controlling shareholder.

| Meta Data | Historical Information about The Limerick Leader was obtained from the paper’s website, as well as from articles in national news outlets such as the Irish Independent and the Irish Times. Information about circulation was gathered from www.medialive.ie. Facts regarding founder Jeremiah Buckeley, were obtained via the Leader website and the Dictionary of Irish Biography (DIB). Notably, the DIB claims that Buckley only obtained the Leader around 1900. However, most sources cite Buckley as the founder. Information on the Leader’s editor, Aine Fitzgerald, was obtained via a Mary Immaculate College alumni profile and her LinkedIn presence. Ownership and financial information was gathered from the FAME Database (Moody’s) regarding Formpress Publishing Limited, Iconic Newspapers Limited, and Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited. An average 2023 exchange rate of EUR 1 = GBP 0.8629 and EUR 1 = USD 1.181 was sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) website. Accurate estimation of outlet market share was not possible because reporting on income levels in Ireland is typically done at the group level rather than the individual title level. Additionally, overall revenue details for the market as a whole are not available. Accurate estimation of audience share was not possible because there is currently no standard of audience measurement available for print and online news titles in Ireland. Individual outlets may publish data on readership or users; however, measurement parameters and sources vary between organisations, thereby limiting opportunities for comparison. | |
