The Business Post (previously The Sunday Business Post) was co-founded by Damien Kiberd, Aileen O'Toole, Frank Fitzgibbon, and James Morrissey in 1989. The paper quickly established itself as an important voice in Irish business and politics, by breaking a number of stories that set the agendas for high-profile tribunals throughout the 1990s.


The paper describes itself as "Ireland's Political, Economic and Financial Newspaper", and has a strong focus on commerce, politics and finance. The Business post is published with a number of supplements including Post Plus (a streamlined Money and Finance section that covers market analysis, personal finance, and investment strategy), The Magazine, (an entertainment and features magazine), and a property supplement. A once-monthly Computers in Business magazine is also included. The newspaper does not have a sports section or letters section.


It is published once a week on Sundays. As of 2023, the paper averaged a per-issue readership of 138,000.


The paper was previously owned by Thomas Crosbie Holdings (TCH). It was then owned by Key Capital, Paul Cooke and staff members (6% equity for staff). It was then owned by Sunrise Media, the shareholders of which include included Key Capital. Enda O’Coineen is the current majority shareholder (57.3%) via his investment company Kilcullen Kapital partners. The remaining shares ae held by Endeavour Fund Investor Nominees Limited (35%) and Swedish family-owned media group Bonnier News Business AB (17.8%).

Ownership StructureThe Business Post is owned by The Business Post Group Ltd, who in turn, are owned by Kilcullen Kapital Partners Ltd (57.3%), Endeavour Fund Investor Nominees (25%) and Swedish media group Bonnier News (17.8%).
This reflects a recent shift in ownership of the Business Post Group. Until 2022, the company was owned by Enda O'Coinneen (89%) and Irish Studio Media Limited (11%). The involvement of the Bonnier Group, the Swedish media group, from summer 2023 has been well signposted. In July 2023, the Business Post Group Limited notified the Companies Regisration Office that Bonnier had acquired six million shares (then 17.8% of all shares) in the company. However, between August 2022 and July 2023 another company, Endeavour Fund Investor Nominees Limited owned by financier Derek Butler, also built a stake in the company (25%) buying out Irish Studio Media's stake in its entirety as well as addiitonal shares from Enda O'Coineen.

  • Damien Kiberd
    As well as being a co-founder, Damien Kiberd initially worked as the editor for The Sunday Business post from 1989 until 2001. He was previously the business editor of The Irish Press and the Sunday Tribune, and presented lunchtime shows on Newstalk and 4FM (Now Irelands Classic Hits Radio).
  • Aileen O’Toole
    Co-founded the Sunday Business Post in 1989, having been editor of Business & Finance Magazine since the age of 29. She left the paper in 2001 to co-found an online communications and marketing consultancy called AMAS Ltd., whose clients have included Bank of Ireland, Diageo and Aer Lingus. She has served on the board of a number of not-for-profit organisations, including, Chambers Ireland (Ireland's largest business network), Business in the Community, ASH Ireland, and the Road Safety Authority.
  • Frank Fitzgibbon
    Prior to co-founding The Sunday Business Post in 1989, Frank Fitzgibbon worked as a freelance journalist for the monthly Irish Business Magazine, where he eventually became an editor. He was also the editor of the Irish Edition of The Sunday Times from 2005 until 2020. He has also worked for the Sunday Tribune, Business & Finance, and as a presenter and reporter for RTE.
  • James Morrisey
    Is a PR Consultant whose clients include former Communicorp owner Denis O’Brien as well as Radio Ireland Limited founders and Riverdance Producers John McColgan and Moya Doherty. He began his journalism carreer working for music magazine Spotlight, before moving to Independent News and Media (now Mediahuis Ireland), where he helped the Evening Herlad transition into a tabloid newspaper. In July 1992 he joined Gilmore and Associates as a financial consultant, and the following year was appointed to the Customs House Docks Authority. In 1994 he was appointed to the board of Bula Resources, and in late 1995 joined PR company Murray Consultants. Mr Morrissey started working for Fleishman-Hillard Saunders in April 1998, and joined the board there in 2001. In 2004 he also joined the board of Newstalk. His son, James Morrissey Jr. is the CEO of Global Brand Equities, who specialize in establishing drink brands for celebrities. Their clients include rappers A$AP Rocky, Post Malone and comedian Kevin Hart.

  • Sarah Murphy
    As well as being the current CEO of The Business Post, Sarah Murphy has been the CEO of the Business Post Group Experiences Pillar (operating as iQuest Ltd & Business Post LIVE) since 2019. From 2011 – 2018 she held a number of positions at the Irish Post in London, including Marketing and Advertising Executive, Marketing Manager, Commercial Manager, and Director of Commercial Operations. From 2019 to 2022 she was the CEO of Irish Hospitality Global. She is a member of a number of boards, including WorkEqual, BITA, Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, and the Business Post Group. She is also a member of the Development Committee for Barretstown.

    Was the political editor of the Irish Examiner since 2015, and previously worked as group political correspondent and chief reporter at Independent News and Media (now Mediahuis Ireland), between 2006 and 2015. He has also worked at the Irish Times and the Sunday Times. He is a regular commentator on Irish television and radio, he has also served as a stand-in presenter on Today FM’s Last Word with Matt Cooper.His 2016 book Hell At the Gates, published by Mercier Press, covered the downfall of the Brian Cowen government and was a national best seller.
