The Kilkenny People is one of two weekly newspapers published in Kilkenny, Ireland, a city with a population of approximately 40,000. The digital version of the outlet, Kilkenny Live, provides similar content to the print version but is updated daily.
The Kilkenny People was founded in 1893 by Edward Thomas Keane and P.J. O’Keefe. Mr Thomas was particularly active in the Irish independence movement, and as a result, the paper was suppressed by the authorities in both 1917 and 1919.
The paper remained in the hands of the Keane Family until 2000, when the entire Kilkenny People Group (which then included three titles) was acquired by Scottish Radio Holdings (SRH) for €35.6m.
SRH folded the Kilkenny People group into its Score Press Limited subsidiary along with titles from Northern Ireland and Scotland. In June 2005, UK media firm, EMAP plc, announced its intention to complete its acquisition of SRH. As part of the deal, it agreed to immediately sell on SRH’s Score Press Limited subsidiary to another Scottish print group, Johnston Press. The sale of Score Press saw 45 titles from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland (which accounted for five titles including The Kilkenny People) sold to Johnston Press.
Kilkenny People is operated by Formpress Publishing Limited and owned by Iconic Media Group, whose parent company is Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited. The Denmark Family owns Media Concierge Limited, with UK businessman Malcolm Denmark as the controlling shareholder.

| Meta Data | Historical Information about the Kilkenny People was obtained from the paper’s website, as well as from sources such as Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE. Information about the Editor, Sam Matthews, was obtained from LinkedIn. Accurate estimation of outlet market share was not possible because reporting on income levels in Ireland is typically done at the group level rather than the individual title level. Additionally, overall revenue details for the market as a whole are not available. Accurate estimation of audience share is not possible. Although Kantar collects publicly available figures on readership for national titles, parallel figures are not available for regional and local newspapers. | |
