The Nationalist is a weekly newspaper published in Clonmel, a town in south County Tipperary, Ireland. The Nationalist and its sister paper, The Tipperary Star, are the main regional media outlets serving the County Tipperary region. The Nationalist is published each Wednesday, and both the Nationalist and the Star populate the news site www.tipperarylive.ie, which primarily runs stories appearing in the papers’ print editions.
The Nationalist was founded in 1890 as a mouthpiece for the Irish Home Rule political movement and the Land League reform advocacy. From May 1892 until February 1908 it was known as the Nationalist and Tipperary Advertiser. From 1908 until December 2010, it was renamed as the Nationalist and Munster Advertiser. Since 2011, it has reverted to its original title of The Nationalist.
In July 1922, in the middle of the Irish Civil war, the paper’s offices and equipment were destroyed by an IRA unit frustrated by the paper’s refusal to adopt an anti-Anglo-Irish Treaty editorial stance.
Somewhat unusually, for the first century of its existence, sharesholdings in the paper were widely spread. The 1924 annual accounts for the paper listed approximately 25 shareholders. By 1991, the 559,999 shares of The Nationalist Newspaper Limited were spread across 100 shareholders with no individual owning more than 14% of the paper.
In 1991, the Nationalist, along with the Tipperary Star were sold for £IR2.5m to the Keane Family-owned Kilkenny People Group. In 2000, the entire Kilkenny People Group, including the Nationalist, was acquired from the Keane family by Scottish Radio Holdings for €35.6m.
In June 2005, UK media firm EMAP plc announced its intention to complete its acquisition of SRH. As part of the deal, it agreed to immediately sell on SRH’s Score Press Limited subsidiary to another Scottish print group, Johnston Press. The sale of Score Press saw 45 titles from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland (which accounted for five titles including The Nationalist) sold to Johnston Press.
Both the Nationalist and the Star were purchased from Johnston Press by Iconic Media in a 2014 acquisition. Iconic Media is owned by Media Concierge (Holdings) Limited, which is in turn owned by the Denmark Family, with UK businessman Malcolm Denmark as the controlling shareholder.
