Daily Mail and General Trust PLC

The Daily Mail and General Trust is the owner of several businesses and publications, notably the Daily Mail UK and The Mail on Sunday, as well as their sister-publications in Ireland and Scotland.
The Daily Mail newspaper was founded by brothers Alfred and Harold Harmsworth in 1896, in 1922 Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) was established to manage the family’s media business interests. In 1929 Esmond Harmsworth (2nd Viscount Rothermere), the son of founder Harold, was appointed Chairman of the Group. In 1932 Esmond took DMGT public, listing the company on the London Stock Exchange. In 1969 DMGT launched Euromoney, an industry magazine aimed at the international finance sector.
In 1978 Vere Harmsworth (3rd Viscount Rothermere) was appointed Chairman of DMGT, inheriting the company from his father. In 1982 The Mail on Sunday was launched for the UK market. In 1998 the company established DMG Events to manage and develop a portfolio of events businesses. In 1990 DMGT bought Hobsons, a UK publishing business specialising in the education sector.
In 1998 Johnathan Harmsworth (4th Viscount Rothermere) was appointed DMGT Chairman following the death of his father Vere. In 1998 DMGT bought RMS, a risk management company specialising in catastrophe risk modelling for insurance, financial services and public sector clients. This year DMGT also launched the freesheet commuter newspaper Metro across a number of urban markets in the UK. The company also bought Landmark, an information services company specialising in the commercial and residential property sectors in 1998.
In 2004 there was another property acquisition for DMGT, Trepp, a US-based company that provided valuation and data solutions for the commercial mortgage-backed securities market. This was followed by the acquisition of Genscape, an energy information business in 2006 and Metal Bulletin, an information service for the metal and steel industry, by DMGT owned Euromoney.
In 2021 Johnathan Harmsworth (4th Viscount Rothermere) acquired 100% of DMGT via his company Rothermere Continuation Ltd. In 2022 DMGT was delisted from the London Stock Exchange. DMGT is now one of the largest media holding companies in the world.
In 2023 Jonathan Harmsworth’s son Vere Harmsworth, was appointed Director of Publishing Strategy for DMG Media having joined the company in 2020 working in business development and subscription strategy. In August 2023 DMGT registered its interest in submitting a bid for the British publisher of conservative titles The Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and Spectator Magazine.
Irish Media Market:
In 2006 DMGT launched The Irish Daily Mail, a subsidiary publication specifically for the Irish Market. DMGT has a similar publication in Scotland for the Scottish market. In this year they also acquired the Ireland on Sunday newspaper and rebranded it as The Irish Daily Mail on Sunday. Investment in Irish titles during the early 2000s happened at a time of economic prosperity when the Irish advertising market provided lucrative opportunities and many UK brands were expanding in the Irish retail space. Launching their Irish titles allowed DMGT to expand their overall readership and generate revenue from the Irish advertising industry. In Ireland DMGT’s business are solely in the media publishing, advertising and events sectors.
The Irish publications are fully owned by DMGT and managed under the DMG Media wing of the company, trading as DMG Media Ireland with offices in Haddington Road, Dublin. (Company registered as Associated Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd Number:IE347441) They have a separate Irish editorial team for both titles based in Dublin and employ 132 people in their Irish publishing operation (2021). Paul Henderson is the current CEO of DMG Media Ireland. In 2021 the Irish operation had a turnover of £12.1M and an operating profit of £1.6M. Outside publishing DMG Media Ireland also operates SpaceTo, a media production company and event planning for the wedding industry via its acquisition of Coral Mint trading as One Fab Day. Through its different publications DMG Media Ireland is active in sponsorship programmes for a variety of organisations in Ireland including the Curragh Racecourse, Camogie Association, Cricket Ireland’s Super series, and the FAI Women’s Cup (Evoke.ie).
